Transit of Mercury - 11/11/2019

Updated: Jul 17, 2021

Observing the transit went well, even though there was a lot of low cloud (Cumulus fractus I think).I set up the Society C11 with an off axis solar filter. A F/6.3 reducer and a 21mm Baader eyepiece gave a good view. The ST80 also had a filter and I fitted an Altair GPCam and collected a number of snapshots between and through the cloud.

Towards the end of the afternoon the Sun was so low that it was being seen through the branches of the hedge - which really needs trimming - and through a distant tree - which we probably can do little about. We managed to get to mid transit before the low sun, clouds, trees and cold beat us.

Hope the people who made it up to the observatory enjoyed the view of a tiny dot on the sun. There was nothing else, not the vestige of a sun spot.
